Day 26 evening in Port Stanley
So we have been in Canada since last post, spent 2 days here. Yesterday went from Marine City MI where we unimpressed with the campground and Kate and I were aware of lots of beer drinking. The boys were not aware and slept like rocks, not surprisingly. When we hit Canada, we hit head winds as we turned south, bummer….plugging along slowly and thinking after a couple of longer days, I was ready for a 70 miler…..however, around lunch we turned East, the wind came to our backs and we were flying along at 20mph or as the Canadians would say 32kph. Made it to Port Stanley, library says the library is the center for tourist info at the town, we had had a couple of longer days, then 103 on this day but hotel was $175 and the library marm called up her husband who wined and dined us. It was a luxury that was incomparable in terms of generosity.
Day 27th off this AM with some more of the tail wind and travel by series of wind farms, soft fruit, we had lots of blueberries and camping at Dunneville. Too many mosquitos to continue. Hasn‘t been bad till now. We deserved a bit of mosquitoes. This was a great stop at a Provincial park. No tax dollars to support it, just user fees. It was great, quiet, busy with folks but not at our place. Tried to burn the place down (again) with the stove but it all worked out. I think about 111 miles.
Day 28 Back to the USA after truly beautiful Canada and peacefulness. Not the same as we crossed the river into Niagra, it was beautiful but crazy and populated to the max. I really dislike finding my way thru cities though NY tries to make good shoulders on some roads that are designated for bikes. Got out of the crazed area and found the Erie Canal trail. We ended in Medina and because of preparation for Harry Potter and late night, got a hotel and let the boys sleep in.
Day 29 Harry Potter at midnight was a priority, not a request, we fortunately were able to get tickets and a hotel nearby in Newark NJ. Colin was in heaven, this in spite of 3 flats, broken chain and broken spoke. The number of mechanical failures has been impressive. Neil, I did have someone rebuild the wheel in Fargo. They are all on Colin’s bike…..hmmm could it be subterfuge that you created. 80+ miles on a shorter day.
Day 30, Today! I will post this which I haven’t had time/3g simultaneously (mechanical repairs). We are smelling the end, I think 250 miles left to Wells River. Travelled along road mostly 88 miles on another shorter day. Nice to have some of these but tomorrow, all should be rested if the boys stop their nocturnal wrestling prior to settling into the tent. Another broken spoke, I am getting good at repairing, just need a truing stand at this time. Making plans for return. Kate has family reunion we will try to hit next Friday/Saturday, likely home Sunday. Neil get the raspberries ready!
2900+ miles I think
Hurray, you've all but done it . Phenomenal, historical, admirable, showing great tolerance for all that can be flung at you. Good job.
